Tying canoe to roof rack. Run 2 boat straps over the top of the kayak and them under the roof rack bars then bring the straps to the other side of the kayak and loop them under the roof rack bars on that side. Some pads will have velcro closures while others will have elastic cords. This can be done with one person for lower vehicles but it is always easier and safer when you have two people. Straps spread the load out a bit and are easy to use but tie the strap ends down after cinching them just in case the buckle fails.
Balance the canoe on the crossbars. If your vehicle has a roof rack you have one of the best situations for tying down a canoe. Lift the canoe up and onto the rack on the vehicle. Tie the straps down with cam buckles to secure the kayak.
Make sure your kayak is still in the same position on your roof rack and that your straps are straight and in line with your roof rack. Tighten the straps by securing the buckles on each strap and wrapping and securing each loose end. If you want to protect the gunwales on the canoe you can put either foam blocks or cloth between the gunwales and racks of your vehicle.
