Its purpose is to protect the wiring and other components from moisture and debris. Pop the plastic cover off of the inside of the door handle then remove the phillips screw inside there.

Roll down windows remove sail panel fully remove door panel unclip mirror harness connection remove 3 10mm nuts holding the mirror making sure not to drop them into the door and remove old mirror.
